Birthplace of Gotaro Mikami
Gotaro Mikami went to Manchuria as a military surgeon during Japanese-Russo War in 1905.
When he was treating wounded soldiers, they were surrounded by a Russian troop and on the verge of annihilation. Gotaro raised a “hand-sewn Red Cross flag”, following the spirit of Red Cross based on the Geneva Convention, and the Russian soldiers stopped attacking.
In the commemoration of his deed to save many soldiers’ lives, regardless of his own or enemy, we preserved his birthplace and turned it into a museum for public.
Gotaro became the village doctor of Sai in his declining years to render medical services in remote places, and was respected by villagers immensely.
Among the displayed articles are the medical devices including an X-ray imaging machine that Gotaro introduced to the village, which was very rare back then.
