Kabuki in Fukuura (Fishery Village Kabuki)

It is a very rare form of kabuki in the nation, the fishery village kabuki, which has been passed down by fishermen for over 100 years.
“Kabuki in Fukuura” in Fukuura Area is designated as the intangible folklore cultural asset by Aomori Prefecture.
It is believed to start when a kabuki actor of Osaka, Kikugoro Nakamura, and his wife visited Fukuura sometime around 1890 and taught the local people the art of kabuki. It was widely accepted by people of Fukuura which did not have much entertainment nor culture and absolutely no pastime during the winter back then, and has been inherited over generations since then.
This kabuki is performed several times a year, such as in the spring festival. Many packaged tours visit the village during such periods.
