Hotokegaura - National Natural Monument

Hotokegaura has been formed by submarine volcanic activities around 20 million years ago and some million years of erosion by the sea.
A band of cliffs and giant stones of mystic shapes lie along the bold shoreline.
Many of the giant stones are named after some Buddhism episodes and others have colorful legends.
As the landscape is very rough and it was difficult to approach from the inland, this place has long been unknown to anybody but the limited locals.
Now, the step way from the Hotokegaura Observatory to the seashore has been built and you can visit this wonderful place on foot.
Also, the regular sightseeing cruise service is available from Sai Port and Ushitaki Port. It is highly recommended to enjoy from the sea the majestic view of Hotokegaura, 2km long from the south to the north.
